A fantastic example of marketing libraries to children

Check out the new Latvian library portal for children: lasamkoks.lv/lat

I think it might be one of my favourite examples of marketing libraries to children I've ever seen! When you first arrive, you're greeted by this fantastic, interactive picture:

The home screen of the children's library portal

Hovering over different parts causes different animations to appear. It's so friendly, and so charming. It's the equivalent of talking the language of our stakeholders - the portal meets the targeted user on a level they understand and identify with.

Clicking on different sections takes you to other parts of the site, also presented in a really nice style, for example:
Go Latvia!

The woodpecker pecks, a hedgehog explores the base of the tree, etc. I think it's brilliant.

In Latvia they take children's views on libraries very seriously, knowing that of course that's where the next generation of users will come from. I was there recently to give a couple of talks on marketing and future trends in libraries. As part of a morning of presentations to the Latvian media - in itself, just having a programme like that is fantastic marketing & advocacy! - the talk before mine was about how they'd asked kids of different ages to draw their ideal libraries, and then brought in child psychologists in to interpret the results. This information then gets fed in to the planning process for future developments. It's refreshing to see such a creative approach - you can read more about this and other Latvian library stuff here. They have some great ideas and forward-thinking marketing practice.

If you have other great examples of initiatives to help libraries appeal to children, let me know via a comment!
